Mandalong Specials

My First Breed

Mandalong Specials bred by Rick Pisaturo, Mandalong Studs, won the pretigious Interbreed Hordern Trophy at the Sydney Royal Easter Show against all breeds. After experiencing a great improvement with crosses, I decided to stabilize 5 breeds with various attributes, for instance: Brahman blood lines to produce a small calf and a hardy beast, Shorthorn blood to produce a carcase that with the infusion of Charolais blood resulted in a well-balanced carcase (adequate fat cover and muscle), British Whites being a dual purpose breed, would introduce better milking ability, yet hardness and a good carcase in its own right, Chianina to maintain size after the criss-crossing was over and the four generation stability was obtained.

Weight gains of 3.63kg per day have been recorded. The Mandalong Specials steers have proved to produce a superior carcase with astonishing yields of up to 66.9%.

The Mandalong Specials cattle have had great results and have won some of the most prestigious trophies and titles, among the achievements:

  • The Interbreed Hordern Trophy at The Royal Agricultural Society – Sydney Royal Easter Show, against thirty nine (39) other registered pure beef breeds.
  • Mandalong Specials steers shown at carcass competitions throughout Australia won many carcass competitions including Champion Heavy Weight Mandalong Specials Carcass at The Sydney Royal Easter Show – at 16 months of age – liveweight 527kg, chilled carcass 349kg, yield 66.22% ( The highest any breed by 2.39%).

Lately young heifers and bulls have been exported to Russia after the 50,000 Mandalong Specials herd that the Soviet Union had accumulated disappeared with the changeover.

The Mandalong Specials composition is as follows:

  • 62.50%
  • 18.75%
